The Wine
Estate – History
Marianne of Prussia
Marianne
of Prussia (1810 – 1883)
She was demanding and beautiful, sensitive and with a mind of her
own, and years ahead of her time: Marianne of the Netherlands was
from the Royal House Nassau-Oranien.
In 1855, Schloss Reinhartshausen with its entire estate and vineyards
became the Home of the only daughter of the first King of the Netherlands,
Wilhelm I. Her life can be traced over the whole of Europe during
a historically turbulent time span.
Born in 1810 in Berlin, where her family went into exile, grown up
in residences in the Netherlands and as wife of a Prussian Prince
back in her birth city, her journey through life changed dramatically
when she broke the social rules of her high status. She succeeded
in getting a divorce from her unfaithful husband and, following the
birth of an illegitimate child from her relationship with her companion
through life, Johann von Rossum, she was expelled from the royal circles.
In the Rheingau, the memories of the “Princess” of Erbach
are still very much alive. The Princess’ royal Savoir-Vivre
brought life to the people of the small wine village and her charitable
generosity allowed the creation of a great many religious, social
and cultural edifices for which she is gratefully remembered.
